Tsiknopempti on Ithaca: A Day of Food, Music, and Tradition
On Tsiknopempti, or Burnt Thursday, Ithaca was bathed in sunlight, the perfect setting for a day rooted in Greek tradition. The festivities in Vathy Square started around midday, where the smell of grilled meat filled the air. The smoky aroma of souvlakia and sausages wafted through the streets as local high school students set up stalls offering a range of tasty snacks.
Over in Kioni, the community hall was buzzing with energy. Locals gathered around tables piled high with grilled meats, drinks flowing freely. The lively atmosphere was made complete with live music, creating the perfect backdrop for a long afternoon of celebration.
Vaggeli Bitouras took the stage to provide the musical entertainment, joined by guest performer Vangelis Michalatos, with support from local backup singers. The lineup included some memorable performances by local personalities, such as: 🎤 Papa Babi, the Singing Priest 🎤 Alexandros Taflampas, the Singing Lawyer 🎤 Vassilis, the Singing Chef and Agiri Restaurant Owner 🎤 Pano Koutosuvelis, the Singing Waiter (formerly of Avra)
With music, dancing, and plenty of good cheer, the celebrations in Kioni continued well into the afternoon, a true reflection of Ithaca’s spirit—where food, song, and tradition bring everyone together. Another Tsiknopempti to remember!
