February 2025

Saturday 1st - It's February! Welcome to Ithaca Greece!

Tuesday 4th - There's not much to report at this time of the year. The island is very quiet and people are just going about their business.

Friday 7th - Still very quiet around the traps. With Carnival not too far away, things will start picking up again.

Monday 10th - Lots of works going on around the island, clearing land for fire breaks which I imagine has little disapproval, considering the very hot Summers we get in Greece with fire danger always looming.

There are also some big development approvals too which have the island divided. Personally I'm in the 'no' sayers as I truly believe money would be better spent on local development that will sustain life on the island for everyone who lives here and not just some special interest groups who have purely financial leanings with no obligation to the local community. I don't know much about it, but I have always opted for local sustainable development where tourism exists within the community rather than outside of it. People love Ithaca because it's Ithaca, not because it's Mykonos.

Thursday 13th - Although we are still in winter mode with chilly temperatures, there are some signs of Spring. The light is beginning to change, bringing with it, hope.

Monday 17th - Lots of works going on around the island and plans being made.

Public Meeting at Stavros Town Hall
A public meeting was held at Stavros Town Hall, organized by the Mayor and Councilors of Ithaca. The purpose of the gathering was to update the residents of northern Ithaca on upcoming projects and council initiatives, as well as to provide a platform for locals to voice their concerns directly to the council.
Key Issues Discussed:
• Fire Prevention & Safety: Funding has been secured, with approval from the Forestry Commission, for the clearing of firebreak roads and pathways. Work has already begun, with recent roadside clearing along the main road from Vathy to Kioni.
• Frikes Port Development: The council has received funding and approval for the redevelopment of Frikes Port, with completion expected by 2028.
• New Sewage Treatment Plant for Vathy: A new sewage plant for Vathy has been approved and funded, marking a significant step in infrastructure improvements.
• Road Development:
o The road from Agios Sarantos to Marmaka will soon be completed, with the final few meters paved all the way to the beach.
o Plans are in motion to secure permission to pave the road from Frikes, further enhancing accessibility.
• Road & Pathway Designations: The council has submitted all local roads and pathways to a government organization for official designation. Currently, only five roads on Ithaca are legally recognized. This classification is crucial, as it will determine which properties outside town zones are considered buildable.
The meeting provided valuable insights into Ithaca’s development plans, giving residents the chance to engage with local governance and voice their concerns in a public forum.

Below - Carnival Festivities Begin!
The carnival celebrations kicked off in full swing yesterday, bringing excitement and energy to Limnes Platrithia! One of the highlights was the Carnival Marathon and Treasure Hunt, an event enjoyed by both young and old.
Despite a few passing rain showers, the turnout was fantastic, with plenty of participants eager to join the fun. The race was lively, and the treasure hunt added an extra thrill, keeping everyone engaged and entertained. Laughter, adventure, and a true carnival spirit filled the air, making it a memorable day for all! CLICK HERE or on photograph below for more pics.

Winter on Ithaca

Saturday 1st

Partly cloudy today with a mild top of around 16C.

Tuesday 4th - Inbetween the rains, it's nice to get out into nature. Everything is lush and green and on a sunny day, the views reach right into the distance.

Friday 7th - Week 1 down for February. With fire danger always looming, Ithaca is taking positive steps forward in clearing fire breaks and roads to access inaccessible areas, so we are as prepared as we can be. Fingers crossed that our good fortune will continue, but you can never be prepared enough so it's good to know Ithaca is pro-active in that area.

Monday 10th

Thursday 13th - It's always a beautiful sight to see the almond blossoms coming out and making the island look quite magical.

Monday 17th - It's been a bit rainy, luckily Ithaca didn't get the floods experienced on Kefalonia.
